News Letter
The Rotary Club of Canvey Island has been working for over 30 years on Canvey, helping the less privileged charities who do not receive funding from local authorities or other organizations and desperately need outside support.
During the past year we have supported BOPH (Business Opportunities for the Physically Handicapped) on the Charfleets Estate, purchased specialized equipment at Cedar Hall Special School (50% of the pupils at Cedar Hall are from Canvey Island), supported Talking Newspapers for the Blind and we have made substantial donations to Havens Hospice, Coast Watch at the Lobster Smack and many other local charities and good causes.
As well as supporting local charities, we provide support in service areas such as achievement awards at the three Senior Schools, providing dictionaries for life to all Canvey Primary School leavers and we have made donations to the 4th Canvey Sea Scouts for new equipment and have assisted with financial help for the local Girls Brigade.
The financing of all these projects has been made possible by the generous support from the local residence during our street collections with the Santa Sleigh and from sponsorship from local businesses and individual’s for our annual “Charity Run” in September.
As an international organisation we also try to support international projects and this year we have raised money for the purchasing of Shelter Boxes. These are sent to distressed areas of the world when a disaster occurs and each box provides shelter and equipment for a family of 10 people for six months. We also had a special week in February called Purple Pinkie. This was our districts contribution to a Rotary Week in which we raised money to provide vaccinations for children in the less privileged parts of the world, to eliminate Polio and to prevent any further out breaks of Polio in the world. This will again be repeated in February 2010.
Again, this year our Santa‘s Sleigh will be touring the streets visiting the people of Canvey. Our sleigh will be leading the procession of the Island Boys Santa Charity Walk on the 6th December from the Labworth Car Park and this starts at mid-day. There will be a collection of presents for the Armed Forces on route, presents for females to have a pink ribbon, so please support us with this project if you can.

Finally the Canvey Island Rotary Club would like to thank members of the public for their continuous support during the year and wish them a very Happy Christmas and New Year.
